Jungle life in Borneo

During our journey through the Malaysian portion of Borneo we were inevitably confronted with the seemingly endless palm oil plantations. Oil palms yield more oil per acre than other crops, but soaring demand for the world’s most popular vegetable oil has led to extensive deforestation and loss of wildlife all across Borneo. To read more about the palm oil issue check out this really informative article from National Geographic

The deforestation has had a significant impact on the Orangutan population. We visited the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre who are doing wonderful work to support the regeneration of the Orangutan population. We were lucky enough to have a close encounter with one of these beautiful creatures and her baby. If you are able to throw some money their way it would be well spent. You can find out more about them here.

Towards the end of our trip we did manage to escape the palm oil plantations and find some ‘off the beaten track’ jungle, where we were able to expereince life in a coastal village bordered by jungle. Here’s some of my favourite moments…
